March 10 - Minor Update
It's once again been several months since I've gotten around to
updating this site, and for now I'm starting slow, just updating
a few things and brushing off cobwebs. I am hoping to do more
with this space in the near future, particularly my
Tarot section.
What is the Fool's Journey?
In a nutshell, the Fool's Journey is simply the journey through
life: the highs, the lows, and everything in between. It is the
path we travel from day to day, and it is the road that leads us
to our destiny, whatever that may be. On this website you'll find
some of the steps on my own Fool's Journey - which has, at times,
been more foolish than I would like, but which I wouldn't change
for anything in the world.
More about
the Fool's Journey
The Fool's Journey is named after one of the cards in the Tarot
deck. In this deck of divinatory cards, there is a group of 22
cards called the Major Arcana, which represent the archetypes and
forces that shape our lives - archetpyes such as the Mother, the
Father, and the Mentor; and forces such as love, judgement and
death. The Fool is the first of the Major Arcana, and in many
traditions he represents each of us as we encounter these various
archetypes and experience these forces. The Fool's Journey is
the journey through the Major Arcana, the journey from birth to
death, and to whatever lies beyond.
The Fool does not get his name from the fact that he is stupid
or dull-witted - he is originally named after the court jester
of medieval times, who was allowed to get away with things that
nobody else would dare, and who in certain cases was a cunning
advisor to the king. At his core he is a non-conformist, a
revolutionary, and when people do not understand the cause that
he fights for or the forces that drive him forward, they often
think of him as foolish. At some point in our lives we all
play the role of the Fool, and we all take up his Journey.
The concept of the Fool's Journey bears some similarities to the
mythological concept of the Hero's Journey, as formulated by
Joseph Campbell. Indeed, you can often look at a Fool's Journey
as a Hero's Journey, and vice-versa. I would contend that the
difference is mainly a matter of scope: while a Hero's Journey
typically follows the hero along a single adventure, the Fool's
Journey can be more overarching, spanning an entire lifetime.
