About Me
My name is James Rioux and I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada along with my wife, Kim Brewer. I have undergraduate degrees in Physics and Computer Science from the University of New Brunswick and am currently a Ph.D. student at Dalhousie University.
My current research is carried out in collaboration with the National Research Council, at the NRC-IBD Atlantic Biomedical MRI Research Lab. My project involves magnetic resonance imaging of stem cells that have been magnetically labelled with super-paramagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. I am helping to develop a quantitative approach for imaging these labeled cells, which may someday be used to evaluate stem cell therapies non-invasively.
In my spare time, such as it is, I enjoy reading science fiction and philosophy, writing, cycling and video gaming. I am a Certified Tarot Master and am chipping away at several Tarot-related projects. I practice meditation and have studied two different styles of Tai Chi: Taoist Style and Wu Style including spear form. (And if you think Tai Chi is just for old people in the park, you have probably never seen it done with a six foot bamboo spear.)
